DAILY BRIEF · 2026-10-31
Three changes this week landed the way most platform changes land: on by default, unless you object. Google pushed ads in AI Mode into ten more markets, India and Southeast Asia among them. Meta switched on in-app product browsing for ads that were already running, so a tap may open Meta's page before yours. And Meta's new commercial terms, due on 30 October, slipped to 20 November with the wording untouched. One clean win: Ads Manager can finally break performance down to individual creative elements.
Ads in AI Mode reach ten more markets, and most of them are where Chinese advertisers buy
On 28 October 2026, Shashi Thakur, Google's VP and GM of Search Ads, announced on the company blog that ads in AI Mode are scaling to ten markets: Australia, Canada, India, Kenya, Malaysia, New Zealand, Nigeria, Pakistan, the Philippines and Singapore, with Brazil, Mexico and the United Kingdom planned for Q4 2026. The US also gets multiturn ads, which let sponsored placements appear in follow-up questions inside an AI Mode conversation rather than only on the first query. Google says AI Mode queries run about three times longer than traditional searches, that users find the ads relevant, and that click-through rates for sponsored product list items are already close to organic ones. That last claim comes without supporting data. Every ad is labelled Sponsored.
Meta intercepts the tap: product browsing switched on by default for live ads on 28 October
Around 14 October Meta sent advertisers an in-product notice: from 28 October 2026 it would switch on product browsing in Facebook and Instagram ads that are already running. Someone who taps an ad may first see an experience inside Meta's apps with product info and personalised suggestions, and only then reach the advertiser's site. The notice carries one blue "Opt out" button, usable before 28 October; after that date the only control is a per-ad toggle under Advantage+ Creative and Destination settings. Meta justifies the change with an experiment run 6-21 August 2026 across roughly 117,700 advertisers, claiming 3% more conversions on average at above 99% confidence across e-commerce, CPG, retail and other verticals. The notice leaves a lot unsaid: which placements, which objectives, whether ads created after 28 October also default on, and whether an API field exists — the 2025 Dynamic Media default did ship with an API opt-out. As of 15 October there was no Meta Help Center article, changelog entry or newsroom post on the change.
Meta's new commercial terms slip to 20 November — the date moved, the text did not
Meta 表示内容方仍可用 robots.txt 表达偏好,但条款正文里没有 robots.txt。
On Friday 23 October a Meta spokesperson confirmed to Reuters that the effective date for its updated Commercial Terms and Self-Serve Ad Terms moves from 30 October to 20 November 2026, to allow "more time for us to explain to our partners and stakeholders what's changing and what's not." The trigger was complaints from publishers and digital advertisers to EU and UK antitrust authorities that the terms grant Meta an effectively unlimited right to use their content for AI services; Meta disputes that reading. That evening Meta's UK English preview page still stated the updates would take effect on 30 October. The substance is unchanged: per a 21 October client alert from law firm Shumaker, Meta may crawl domains "associated with" the advertiser's products or services and periodically pull updates — with "associated" left undefined — may create test credentials to access sites, and places responsibility for AI errors on the advertiser. Meta says content owners can still use robots.txt to signal preferences, but the terms themselves do not mention robots.txt.
Ads Manager can finally break reporting down to individual creative elements
Social Media Today reported on 27 October that Meta has added a Breakdown option in Ads Manager that splits an ad's results down to individual creative elements. Choosing Creative and then Media shows how each image and video performed when delivered as single media; choosing Dynamic creative element and then a text type shows how each copy variation performed; a separate Ad delivery breakdown reports media assets that have been removed from an ad. The limits are explicit: ads opted into multi-post display formats such as Show as collection or Show as carousel are excluded from the list, and custom conversion elements including Donate and Subscribe return no insight.
TikTok moves checkout inside the app: Buy Direct, a shopping agent, Agentic Leads, and an ad network of 400,000 apps
At Advertising Week New York, held 5-7 October, TikTok launched what it calls its Agentic Commerce framework. Two consumer-facing pieces: Buy Direct, one-click checkout inside the For You feed using stored payment methods and addresses, and Shopping Assistant, a conversational agent that answers questions on product details, shipping, sizing and stock and can complete the purchase in the same conversation, built with Salesforce, Shopify, Shoplazza and Stripe on the merchant side. For advertisers there is Agentic Leads, aimed at capturing, qualifying and converting high-intent prospects, plus AI applied to ads in the search bar and on TikTok Shop listings. One structural change stands out: Pangle is now TikTok Ad Network (TTAN) and is opening to US advertisers across close to 400,000 third-party apps. TikTok frames all of it as eligibility-based testing, with no general-availability date given.
